The UK is set to see a major expansion in charging infrastructure for zero-emission HGVs, with plans for 54 new charging and refuelling hubs announced by Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood.

Speaking at the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrations (ZEHID) programme summit, the Minister confirmed that these hubs will be strategically located across the country, including depots, motorway services, and key arterial routes. They will support both electric HGV charging and hydrogen refuelling, making it easier for operators to transition to low-carbon fleets.

The ZEHID programme, managed by Innovate UK, represents a £200 million investment from the Department for Transport (DfT). This initiative aims to provide essential infrastructure to accelerate the decarbonisation of the UK road freight sector.

Chris Ashley, Senior Policy Lead at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), welcomed the investment, highlighting that it will give operators greater confidence when planning their move away from diesel-powered vehicles. The RHA is keen to see further details and will continue working with industry stakeholders to support the sector’s journey to net zero.

Each of the 54 hubs is being developed by one of four key project partnerships under the ZEHID programme:

• Project Electric Freightway

• eFREIGHT2030

• ZENFreight

• HyHAUL

This investment marks a significant step forward in building a sustainable, zero-emission future for UK road haulage. Stay updated on how these developments will impact operators and the wider industry.
