From 1 April 2025, DVSA brake performance testing rules are tightening. As a vehicle operator, it’s essential to understand what’s changing and how to stay compliant.

🚛 What’s Changing?

Every safety inspection must now include a brake performance assessment using:

- A roller brake tester (RBT), or

- An electronic brake performance monitoring system (EBPMS), or

- A decelerometer with temperature readings.

At least four brake tests per year must be conducted laden, spaced evenly, and can include the annual test.

📋 Risk Assessments

If a vehicle isn’t tested laden, a competent person must complete a risk assessment explaining why. This assessment must be kept on file.

📎 EBPMS Users

If using an EBPMS, there must be a review of the data before each safety inspection. This review must be signed, dated, and attached to the vehicle’s maintenance file.

⚠️ What This Means for You

You’ll need to:

- Update your inspection processes

- Train staff on new requirements

- Keep proper documentation for every brake test and risk assessment

Don’t leave it to chance – review your systems now to avoid non-compliance.
